Funerals/Memorials

Creating the ceremony begins from the first contact I have with my clients.  I usually meet at the home for an informal chat and learn about their loved one as well as their own life beliefs. My job is to honor the story of the deceased’s life. It’s not about telling, it’s about asking. Some of the questions I ask are: “What did they love about life?” “How would they want to be remembered?” “What did they value above all else?” “Of what were they most proud?” It’s stories that make the ceremony: the funny, the sad, the moments of life change. These stories are the heart of a legacy. After gathering information I write the eulogy and I include those who wish to share a story, read a poem or introduce a piece of music that was meaningful to the deceased. As a storyteller I am able to take their truth and make it into something that resonates with others regardless of their own life stories. Entering someone’s life at such a time of deep sadness and pain is one I do with kindness, love and respect. Indoors or outdoors, colorful or subdued, traditional or quirky, as a Heart-led Celebrant I create life centered funerals and memorials that balance the celebration of a life and the mourning of a death.

Blessingway

The Blessingway Ceremony is a Navajo tradition that honors women in their last moon of pregnancy (the last trimester). The ceremony takes place with everyone seated in a circle. Each woman introduces herself and her foremothers and then there are uplifting birth stories, readings, and music shared. Different affirmation rituals, meditations and even belly painting are some of the wonderful activities that can be included! This usually takes several hours.

Naming Ceremonies

This ceremony can be a celebration of a child’s name, a name change or a new name chosen by a member of the LGBTQ community. This ceremony includes the meaning behind the name (the full name) and a wide array of possible traditions that symbolically tie in. Often friends, parents, grandparents, and family participate in the ceremony!

Menarche: the First Blood Ceremony

In many cultures the time when a young woman reaches the age of menstruation is a time of great celebration. Our culture is slowly beginning to have an awareness of how important this time is for a young woman. This is a ceremony to welcome girls to their reproductive years, a time when much of childhood is left behind. The women present offer guidance and friendship.  Lovely rituals can include Henna painting, flower garlands, poetry, stories, gifts, candle lighting for intention and a presentation of the Red Box which contains items that nurture a woman during her moon time. Items such as soothing teas (Chamomile, Raspberry leaf and Valerian) or essential oils are always a favorite. Welcoming another woman into “the tribe” is a beautiful and meaningful ceremony.

Renewal of Vows

Very similar to a wedding ceremony.  Sharing a couple’s love story is such an honor!  The initial meeting will also include a page of questions for each person to answer.  Questions such as: “What is it about your spouse that makes you smile without fail?”, “What makes you laugh together?”, “How did you meet?” and many others.  The end of the ceremony concludes with a forgiveness ritual that is designed to let anything from the relationship like guilt, old angers, fears or shame melt down into Mother Earth and dissolve.  Leave all of this behind in order to move forward into the next chapter of the marriage with free and happy hearts. This ceremony can be for a roomful of people, a large gathering of friends and family, outdoors in a meadow or park or perhaps a private ceremony with just the couple themselves.  A co-created ceremony that is tailored for exactly what you want it to be!

Handfastings

This is an ancient Celtic ritual that is usually incorporated into weddings but can also be used in Vow-Renewals, or a lovely ceremony on its own.  This binding of hands with ribbon or cord in public (in front of friends and family) is a beautiful and simple tradition used to symbolize vows. The knot is tied in the figure of an eight to symbolize eternity.  There are usually three cords which represent each person and then the Universe or God. Even the colors of the handfasting cord are symbolic and chosen by the couple. Sometimes special objects are woven into the handfasting cord such as jewelry, charms, and precious stones. Just about anything that has meaning to the couple can be used in creating the Handfasting cord. Often times the simplest of ceremonies is the loveliest and this is definitely one of them.

House Blessing

A delightful way to breathe fresh life into your living space or to bless a new home. A house blessing treats the home as a living entity since it absorbs our vibrations. I feel it’s important to treat our living space with great care and purpose.  Fill the rooms with love, open the windows and let the negativity out! I cleanse the space with smudge burning and salt, intentions are stated and blessings of joy and happiness are given. This is about creating a living space that is a sanctuary, a place of relaxation, comfort and where laughter and celebration occurs.  There could be a tree planting, a happy dance, music, freshly baked bread, a ritual that involves the children of the home as well and many other options depending on the family. This is one of my favorite ceremonies!

Divorce Healings

This ceremony is not about blame. It’s all about liberating both people through forgiveness and recognition of the pain, the mourning and even grief that is felt.  This beautiful and healing ceremony empowers in such a heartfelt way. The good of the relationship will be acknowledged and no one gets to point the finger of blame at the other.  This ceremony allows both sides to give thanks, forgive one another, let go and bless one another in their new life forward. Children can share in this ceremony as well so that both parents can let them know that they will continue to love them fully despite the upheaval.  This is a ceremony that offers closure so that everyone can move forward with respect and friendship.

Menopause: the Wise Crone Ceremony

This is the beginning of such a powerful chapter in a woman’s life! This ceremony celebrates another kind of beauty which includes changes in lifestyle choices, nutrition, mindfulness, exercise and positive thinking.  Allow at least several hours for this ceremony. It’s all about leaving behind the old and embracing a new life. The space we use is cleared with sage smudges, candles are ceremoniously lit and friends honor the Crone with blessings, songs, stories, poetry, gifts, perhaps a foot massage or even a lovely head garland.  So many rituals are available for this ceremony and it will be my pleasure to co-create this milestone celebration with you!
